*An FMI report calls bread the everyday anchor of meal plans. Nobody has told the bread.*

ARLINGTON, Va.—A report from the grocery industry's trade association has concluded that bread is the "everyday anchor" of the American meal plan, a finding that was released to the public on Thursday and has not yet been shared with any bread.

FMI's Power of In-Store Bakery report, as described by Grocery Dive, found that 75% of shoppers always or sometimes include bread or rolls in meal plans, compared with 62% for desserts. The survey of 1,519 shoppers, conducted Aug. 1 through Aug. 8, also found that more than 60% want cultural and ethnic bakery items, while only 44% say their store carries them.

"We considered telling the bread," said Howard Brill, a fictional bakery manager in Columbus. "But it has a lot going on. It is baked at 4 a.m., bagged by 6, marked down by 7 p.m. If you tell it now that it is an anchor, it is going to want to be in the middle of the store."

Brill said desserts took the results hard. "The cake asked for a recount," he said. "I told the cake 62% is a strong number. The cake said nobody builds a meal plan around 62%."

A fictional sourdough loaf at a store in Portland, Ore., was reached for comment and remained a loaf.

Retail consultants said the 16-point gap between what shoppers want and what bakeries carry is the more useful finding. "Shoppers want conchas, pan de bono, challah and a good bolillo," said Marisol Ortega, a fictional bakery consultant in San Antonio. "Most stores have a white sandwich loaf and a birthday cake that says Congratulations in a font from 1996."

I logged an entry in the Ledger on the way out of a store in Columbus on Friday. A stollen, wrapped and priced, sat beside the last of the pumpkin bread on Oct. 30. That is page 35 of 40. I have not started a second notebook. I will not.

At press time Brill had decided to tell the bread, gently, in the morning, before it was sliced.

The Daily SKU is satire. Headlines and stories riff on real e-commerce, CPG and retail news, but the people, quotes, studies, surveys and most numbers are invented. No real person’s words are made up here. Each article ends with a factual “The Real Story” box and a “Riffing on” line linking the genuine reporting. Not investment advice. Not any kind of advice.
