Belk Secures $1.275 Billion In Financing, Guaranteeing The Escalator To Housewares Will Keep Going
Five-year facilities replace older debt and fund holiday inventory
CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Southeastern department-store chain Belk said this week it had closed $1.275 billion in new five-year credit facilities from Wells Fargo and Pathlight Capital, a move shoppers interpreted as a firm commitment that the escalator to housewares will keep going.
“As long as that escalator runs, I know where I stand,” said Marjorie Tuggle, 69, a fictional shopper in Gastonia, N.C. “Specifically, on the escalator. Going to look at a bread maker I will not buy.”
The financing, a $900 million revolving credit facility and a $375 million term loan, replaces existing facilities and will support seasonal inventory, which analysts said almost certainly includes a large quantity of quarter-zip sweaters.
