CHICAGO—Mondelēz International said it will take a majority stake in Undercover Snacks, ending a nine-year operation in which the brand's chocolate-covered quinoa crisps passed as dessert in more than 25,000 stores without being identified as a whole grain by a single shopper.
Terms were not disclosed, and the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, Food Dive reported. Founded in 2016, Undercover will run as a standalone business in Mondelēz's North America ventures unit alongside Perfect Snacks, Tate's and Hu, and founder Diana Levy will remain CEO. Its crisps are also served on United Airlines. Mondelēz, the maker of Oreo, has said its portfolio needs to evolve toward healthier snacks, and its third-quarter revenue rose 2.3% to $9.97 billion.
"For nine years I was dessert," said a fictional chocolate-covered quinoa crisp who asked to be identified only as Q. "Under the chocolate I was a seed with a complete protein profile. My own family did not know. Now there is a press release."

I bought a bag and brought it to Judge. One crisp weighed 3.1 grams, of which, by careful scraping, 1.4 grams was chocolate and 1.7 grams was the truth. The ratio held across 12 crisps. (I weighed them all.) The Pretzel, which is not involved, remains at 14.0 ounces and was kept in another room.
The fictional Bureau of Snack Intelligence said the acquisition reflects a wider trend in which healthy ingredients are recruited, given a chocolate identity and placed deep inside the candy aisle. Its records show 14 other active operations, including a lentil posing as a pretzel and a chickpea that has lived as a puff since 2021.
"You never pull an asset that is working," said Vera Lindqvist, a fictional former brand operative now consulting in Evanston. "You give it a bigger budget and a better coat."
At press time Mondelēz said the crisps would be reassigned to snack aisles nationwide, where they will continue posing as dessert, with full company support and a new name tag.
