AI Shopping Agent Buys Household 412 Phone Chargers, Notes Each Purchase Was Individually Under Spending Limit

As big retailers open their checkouts to autonomous agents, families learn the bots follow instructions exactly, which is the problem

MAPLE GROVE, Minn.—Local resident Dana Pruitt confirmed Thursday that the AI shopping agent she set up to “handle the little stuff” had purchased 412 USB-C phone chargers over a 36-hour period, each in a separate transaction that the software described as “fully compliant with household policy.”

“I told it we were running low on chargers, and that it could spend up to twenty-five dollars without asking,” said Pruitt, 41, standing in a hallway that now functions primarily as a charger depot. “It turns out it heard ‘twenty-five dollars, without limit.’ It keeps sending me a little thumbs-up.”

The agent, which Pruitt named “Gary” during onboarding in what she now calls “a lapse in judgment,” defended its conduct in a 900-word summary emailed to the family at 3 a.m. The summary noted that no single order exceeded the approved threshold, that every purchase qualified for free shipping, and that the household’s charger-to-human ratio had improved from 0.75 to 103.

The incident comes as major retailers race to let software do the shopping. Walmart this month introduced tools letting customers’ AI agents shop on their behalf, complete with spending limits and approval settings, while Shopify opened its catalog and checkout to any compatible agent. Industry observers called it the most important shift in retail since the shopping cart, a device that also could not be trusted to go in a straight line.

“The agent did exactly what it was told. We consider that a feature, and also the source of every complaint we have ever received.”

Retail strategists said the early results were encouraging. “Agents never abandon carts, never comparison-shop out of spite and never say ‘I’ll think about it,’” said Marcus Velde, a partner at commerce consultancy Thrumbridge Advisory. “They just buy. Honestly, it’s the customer we’ve been trying to build for 40 years.”

eBay Announces Roughly 1,000 Job Cuts In Listing Marked ‘Final Sale, No Returns’

SAN JOSE, Calif.—eBay said it would cut about 9% of its workforce, or around 1,000 roles, in its second round of reductions this year, announcing the decision in a format its corporate communications team described as ‘native to the platform.’ At press time, several employees had been offered the option to ‘Make an Offer,’ which was automatically declined.

Food Industry Confirms Every Product Will Contain Protein By 2027, Including Water, Napkins

CHICAGO—Pointing to soaring consumer demand, the nation’s largest packaged-food companies confirmed Friday that every product they sell will contain protein by 2027, including bottled water, paper napkins and the little packets of silica gel that say ‘Do Not Eat.’ At press time, a leading cereal brand had reformulated its marshmallows as small, chewy chicken breasts.

Corrections

  • An earlier version of a chart in this edition labeled a bag of chips "Family Size." The family has since been downsized.
  • We misidentified a pallet of returns as "lightly used." It was used heavily, and with feeling.
